How many important Vocabulary Lists are there?
There are said to be about 128,000 ‘word families’ in large Webster’s dictionary (a word family is defined as a group of words which are derived from one root word and includes all inflected forms of the word). But not all of these are of equal importance, because out of these only some words are used repeatedly in texts and spoken English.
There are three main vocabulary lists an English language learner must know in order to understand written texts and be able to communicate in English.
How many words from vocabulary lists should you know?
A 5 year old child, native speaker of English language is estimated to knows about 5,000 words, whereas an average adult native speaker 18,000 to 20,000 words. This approximation is done based on the fact that native speakers are constantly exposed to the language at home and school.
But, learners of English as a second language do not know so many words because they do not have same exposure to the language as natives do.Therefore, they should know enough words from GSL vocabulary lists or ESL most frequent word list to get around basic English texts.
Out of a large number of 128,000, in the dictionary , only some account for usefulness based on:
(a) The high frequency of 1,000 word families vocabulary lists over 80% of fiction and conversational English, over 75% of newspaper texts, and over 70% of academic texts. Thorough knowledge of those words is therefore an extremely high priority for any learner of English.
(b) The next 1,000 vocabulary lists in terms of frequency add extra coverage of between 6% (conversation) and 4.6% (academic text).
(c) For tertiary level students, a list of 570 ‘academic’ word families (used frequently across a wide range of disciplines) is the next most useful group of words – more useful than the third 1,000 chosen by overall frequency in modern English.
These academic items have been known to form 8.5% of a corpus of academic texts, and to be well spread across disciplines; and indeed form over 4.5% of newspaper text like (A few examples: area, definition, option, specify, indicate.) Some of the words are special uses of words with other high-frequency meanings; smaller dictionaries may not show these more specialized meanings at all.
Researchers through intensive research in vocabulary acquisition in second language acquisition have come up with Vocabulary list which contain words based on their frequency in English language usage e.g. High Frequency Word Lists and Academic word vocabulary lists.
